Well Bred Cattle Dogs
I have always been interested in having good stock dogs, but it wasn't until I met Gary Erickson in Oklahoma that I gained a new appreciation for what well bred and well trained dogs can accomplish on a ranch.
The idea that I could actually train a dog to run out and 'fetch' the cattle for me changed my views of the purpose of a farm dog, and what they could do for my operation. |
I tried training heelers, border collies and even kelpie mixes, but nothing matches the finesse of a nicely bred border collie. I had a great border collie bred from sheep lines that was finally able to master the commands and use her own instincts to move livestock.
However nicely bred she was, she wasn't bred for cattle. I spent months waiting for the best of the best in cattle lines. Training and working these dogs has been a night and day difference from my mutts or heelers.
